Samsung sold more smartwatches than anyone else last year. It shifted 1.2 million of the wearables – that's around half a million more than Pebble, which came in second with 700,000.

Samsung's pole position isn't much of a surprise. It currently sells six different smartwatches, including the Gear S, Gear Fit and Gear 2.

Second place is quite an achievement for Pebble, however, seeing as it's a much smaller company.

But it's overcome that competitive advantage to achieve huge success with its original smartwatch and the new Pebble Time, which has raised almost $18 million on Kickstarter, and still has over two weeks to go.

Fitbit came third with 600,000 units, and Sony was fourth with 550,000. Lenovo sold 500,000 smartwatches, LG 420,000, and Garmin 400,000.

This was followed by Withings (170,000), Polar (150,000) and Asus (120,000).

Boom times for smartwatches, then. The Apple Watch will launch on April 24th.

Analysts predict it could sell more on its first day than all Android Wear devices combined. The Cupertino company is said to have ordered 3 million units for its initial sales run.

Google is plotting a new Android Pay mobile payments tool and will reveal its plans at its annual I/O event in May. Sources have told Ars Technica that the new service will not replace its existing Google Wallet product.

Instead, Google will offer an API to developers so they can build a mobile payment solution directly into their apps, allowing users to pay via NFC when they go into shops.

This differs hugely from Google Wallet and the rival Apple Pay platform, which offer a central hub for credit and debit cards. Word is that Android Pay will be able to draw banking information from Google Wallet to help smooth the process of adding personal details to new apps.

Apple Pay has proved a huge success since its launch at the end of 2014 in the US and has also helped Google Wallet to surge, with a growing awareness among consumers about mobile payments.

It’s not yet clear when Android Pay will launch and if it will have a global presence. Google is not said to have signed on with any partners, meaning it could be some time before we see the service go live.

Google will launch its own mobile network, in the United States at least, after Android chief Sundar Pichai confirmed rumours of the tech giant's plans at Mobile World Congress (MWC).

As expected, it won’t be a standalone service, rather an MVNO, much like Tesco Mobile and giffgaff here in the UK.

However, Pichai suggested that the network wouldn’t be your average mobile provider.

He said it was more along the lines of Google’s Nexus handsets and would be an experimental platform that would tie in with its Google Fiber broadband programme across the pond.

Word is it’ll allow seamless switching from Wi–Fi to 4G, essentially supplementing the broadband service Google already offers.
